The New Fascists

The New Fascists is a new play being developed by Horseshoes & Hand Grenades Theatre in collaboration with Seattle’s ACT Theatre.

A theatrical adaptation of the controversial 1935 novel by Sinclair Lewis “It Can’t Happen Here”, Thew New Fascists is a cautionary tale about the fragility of democracy, and an alarming look at how easily fascism can take hold. Written during the Great Depression, when America was largely oblivious to the rise of Nazism and the aggressive policies of Adolph Hitler, the original book juxtaposes sharp political satire with the chillingly realistic rise of a U.S. President who gets elected on a wave of populism, only to become a dictator in order to save the nation from welfare cheats, sex, crime, and a liberal press.
