An Essay in Chalk

Over the course of the creation and development of This Stays in the Room, we experiemented with a number of media for how we wanted to depict the real and fragmented selves that will be exposed on stage. Some high-tech media, some low-tech. But one medium that resonated strongly was the simplest of all: chalk.

The ubiquitous image of the ‘chalk outline’, the personification of the remnants of a once-living person, became a symbolic vehicle for transferring these ‘characters’ that are, in essence, ourselves.

Plus, you can do some pretty cool stiff with chalk, lights and projectors.
