Call for Applications: New Co-Artistic Director

POSTING: CO-ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Horseshoes & Hand Grenades Theatre creates and produces original theatre, ranging from new Canadian works to pieces from the international repertoire. We foster the development of our artists through collaborative processes while exploring new forms of theatre practice. HHG is drawn to where the political and personal intersect. We explore stories of corruption, idealism, compassion, love, violence and redemption, both within the individual and the community. We do this through a process that supports boldly imaginative concepts, risk-taking, arduously-developed texts, and a unique collaborative process that brings out the best of our artists. Our vision moving forward is to create and share these startling theatrical moments in order that we might contribute to the vital dialogue at the root of society: “What is becoming of our world? What is my role in it? What action can I take?”

HHG is currently seeking a Co-Artistic Director to work in collaboration with current Co-Artistic Director Mary Ellis. The role will include curation, project development (including grant writing), company development, administrative tasks and supporting the overall artistic process of the company. The ideal candidate will have the following qualities and experiences: an interest in socially conscious theatre, and a body of work and/or study that demonstrates a consciousness of the artist’s role in society and a sense of responsibility to its audience and community; a history of artistic practice and experience in theatre, be that directing, dramaturgy, playwriting, design, or another area of theatrical work; grant writing skills; general financial literacy and comfort working with project budgets; a spirit of collaboration, flexibility, and generosity; ability to work both independently and in collaboration with others. All applications will be carefully considered. We strongly encourage applications from established and/or emerging artists, artists of colour, Indigenous artists, those from the Disabilities communities, queer and gender non-conforming artists, and those from any community that has been historically marginalized in terms of representation in the performing arts. We also encourage emerging Artistic Directors and Artistic Producers to apply, as mentorship in this role may be provided. Horseshoes & Hand Grenades works on a project basis, and as such can offer project-based and grant-dependent honorariums to its Co-Artistic Directors. The nature of the work is flexible and project dependent.

To Apply: please send your CV and a letter of interest to Janne Cleveland, Chair of the Board, at jchalifax58[at]gmail.com by June 25, 2021. Your letter should answer the following questions: What is your career background, and how would this position fit into your artistic journey and practice?
