HHG Theatre announces Playwright-in-Residence

Horseshoes & Hand Grenades Theatre is thrilled to announce that Ottawa/Gatineau writer Mishka Lavigne is to be our first-ever Playwright-in-Residence, as she creates and develops her new politically-charged play Shorelines during our 2017/18 and 2018/19 seasons. This residency is made possible thanks to support from the Canada Council for the Arts.

“Shorelines takes place in a not too distant future, where sea levels have risen to critical levels. Entire shorelines are being redefined as levees and containments breach. Crumbling cities are abandoned by the rich, leaving only the disenfranchised behind. In one of these dying cities, Alix, Shay and Evan find refuge in an abandoned swimming pool. With nothing else to lose, they decide to make someone pay for what happened to the world, holding Portia, a government official, hostage.”

Mishka Lavigne is a playwright and literary translator based in Ottawa/Gatineau. Her plays have been produced, read and developed in Canada, France and the United States. Along with Shorelines, she is also currently working on Copeaux, a movement-based poetic creation piece with director Éric Perron. Mishka is a National New Play Network (USA) alumni playwright as well as a member of the Playwrights’ Guild of Canada and the Centre des auteurs dramatiques. She also recently took part in BILTC at the Banff Centre to work on her translation into French of Rosanna Deerchild’s poetry collection calling down to the sky, to be published in 2018.
